Species distribution of coagulase-negative staphylococcal isolates at a community hospital and implications for selection of staphylococcal identification procedures.
A total of 499 coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) were isolated from a variety of clinical specimens at a community hospital. Ten different species and many strains of CoNS were identified. Staphylococcus epidermidis was the most common isolate. The species distribution suggests that S. saprophyticus and, to a lesser extent, S. haemolyticus may be important in urinary tract infections. S. ...
متن کاملA Novel MSCRAMM Subfamily in Coagulase Negative Staphylococcal Species
Coagulase negative staphylococci (CoNS) are important opportunistic pathogens. Staphylococcus epidermidis, a coagulase negative staphylococcus, is the third leading cause of nosocomial infections in the US. Surface proteins like Microbial Surface Components Recognizing Adhesive Matrix Molecules (MSCRAMMs) are major virulence factors of pathogenic gram positive bacteria. Here, we identified a ne...
متن کاملComparison of genotypic and phenotypic methods for species identification of coagulase-negative staphylococcal isolates from blood cultures.
Coagulase-negative staphylococci are often isolated from blood cultures. Simple methods are needed for correct identification of those species most frequently found. In this study, PCR methods were developed for the identification of S. epidermidis and S. haemolyticus, based on DNA sequences in their 16S rDNA. The results obtained by these methods were compared with those obtained using a numbe...
متن کاملPurification of staphylococcal coagulase.
Correlation between the pathogenicity of certain staphylococci and their ability to produce coagulase has led to extensive studies of the clotting enzyme. Walston (1935) precipitated the clotting substance from cell-free filtrates of appropriate staphylococcal cultures by the use of ethanol, acetic acid, or ammonium sulfate. Walker et al. (1948) partially purified staphylocoagulase by repeated ...
متن کاملCharacterization of coagulase-negative staphylococcal isolates from blood with reduced susceptibility to glycopeptides and therapeutic options
BACKGROUND Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are a major cause of nosocomial blood stream infection, especially in critically ill and haematology patients. CoNS are usually multidrug-resistant and glycopeptide antibiotics have been to date considered the drugs of choice for treatment. The aim of this study was to characterize CoNS with reduced susceptibility to glycopeptides causing blood...
